Mawmaw’s Red Velvet Cake

Cake:

  1. Cream together 1/2 cup crisco and 1-1/2 cup sugar; beat 2 eggs into mixture.
  2. In seperate bowl mix 2 cups flour (sifted), 1 tbsp. cocoa, and 1/2 tsp. salt.
  3. Add (alternatly with dry ingredients) 1 cup buttermilk, 1 tsp. vanilla, and 1 – 2oz. red food coloring.
  4. Add 1 tsp. baking soda dissolved in 1 tbsp. white vinegar.
  5. Bake in 2 – 9″ cake pans for 30-35 minutes at 350°.

Frosting:

  1. Cook to pudding stage 1 cup milk, 1/4 cup flour, dash of salt; let cool (important!).
  2. Cream together 1/2 cup softened butter, 1/2 cup Crisco, 1 cup sugar.
  3. Add to creamed mixture/pudding add 1 tsp. vanilla and beat until fluffy.

Note:
The frosting is what makes Mawmaw’s recipe so different from the normal cream cheese frosting!

  3. The icing for mom’s cake is sublime. It’s not the typical cream cheese icing used in most red velvet cakes. You have to try it!!!
