Flower of the Week: Sunflowers

Scientific name:  Helianthus Annus

Is there any flower out there that says summertime as much as a sunflower?  Named from the flowers shape and image which depicts the sun, this annual plant is native to the America’s.  Not only are sunflowers grown for their beauty but is an important source of food. Sunflowers are valued as a healthy oil and the seeds are enjoyed as a healthy tasty snack and a nutritious ingredient to many foods.

I grow these beautiful gigantic flowers every year in my vegetable garden from seed and wanted to share them with you.

Note: I am so delighted that I took these pictures earlier because as of today, the squirrel’s have climbed every plant, eating there way through my entire crop.  They also ate every pear on my pear trees this year.  What to do? What to do?

What the Sunflower is Telling Us

Each and every morning, the sunflower is in need of a sun so bright,
And since we are also part of nature, we too need the sun’s day light.
So dependent on the sun, the sunflower looks eastward each morning,
following it faithfully and looking westward each evening.
This daylight will pass to the retina sending neurochemical messages to our brain,
resulting in a very profound effect that stabilizes our mood and not allowing it to wane.
So follow the schedule of the sun,
Get up early for day light and have fun.

Note: My husband’s doctor shared his poem with us today. A delightful coincidence!
